Let George do it
I'm not certain that we gain any individual merit by simply paying our taxes and hoping that the government will do our job of looking after the needy (and Scripture is quite clear about the importance of that job). In theory, perhaps we can delegate almsgiving to the government, but if we come across a person or an organization in need, saying, "I voted for officials who believe in helping the poor and I paid my taxes to help them do it," probably isn't enough. I still think we have to set aside some of our income for charities of our own prayerful choosing.
